How to Get to Atins
Atins is one of those places that stays unspoilt precisely because it isn’t easy to reach — and the journey is already part of the trip. The route runs through São Luís, on to Barreirinhas and ends at the edge of the Rio Preguiças. We don’t run the transport ourselves, but we explain how each leg works and point you to trusted partners over WhatsApp, so you arrive without a worry.

From Barreirinhas
Barreirinhas is the gateway to Atins:
- Boat along the Rio Preguiças — 1h30 scenic journey
- 4x4 along the beach (tide dependent)
The reference airport is São Luís (SLZ), the closest one, with daily flights from cities across Brazil. In high season there’s also the option of a charter flight to Barreirinhas, which shortens the journey considerably. Whatever your route, just message us and we’ll point you to the best options.
The final stretch into Atins depends on the tide. When the tide is right, the 4x4 runs along the beach; otherwise the boat along the Rio Preguiças (about 1h30) is the way in. Departures usually run in the morning and the early afternoon — we’ll point you to the best times for your date, because the tide shifts every day.
Once you reach the port at Atins, the Rancho is just nearby, through the village’s sandy lanes. We’ll explain exactly how to do that last stretch over WhatsApp — just let us know your arrival time.
Pack light: the boat and the 4x4 have luggage limits, so a backpack works better than a big hard suitcase. Beachwear, sunscreen, a pair of shoes for the water and something for the evening wind will see you through — Atins is barefoot and unhurried.
Best time to visit
When the lagoons are full
The lagoons of the Lençóis Maranhenses fill up turquoise-blue from May to September, after the rains — the magic window for the classic walk, at its peak in July and August. From June to August the village is at its liveliest and the wind favours kitesurfing. Outside that window Atins is still beautiful: beach, river and the Rancho’s coconut grove all year round — only the lagoons run low, and the village grows even quieter. Whatever the month, message us on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you the best time for what you want to see.
