How to Get Here
Atins lies on the coast of Maranhão, where the Rio Preguiças meets the Atlantic Ocean — a village that began with fishermen and sailing rafts, and is today the gateway to the Lençóis Maranhenses. It also sits on the Route of Emotions, the trail linking the Lençóis to the Parnaíba Delta and Jericoacoara.
Why stay the night in Atins
Stay in Atins — don’t just visit for the day
Many people see the Lençóis on a day trip from Barreirinhas and miss the best part: late afternoon in Atins, when the tours head off and the village belongs only to those who sleep here. Staying at the Rancho, you set out early for the lagoons with no rush, then return to the calm of the coconut grove by the river. The Rancho sits right in the village, with the beach just a few minutes’ walk away — the best of both worlds: the quiet of the village and the sea right there.
Atins is one of the most sought-after stops on the Route of Emotions, the route that threads together the Lençóis Maranhenses, the Parnaíba Delta and Jericoacoara, in Ceará. Travellers following the route can pair Atins with the Delta and Jeri — and we’ll point you to trusted partners so you can do each leg with peace of mind.

Best time to visit
When the lagoons are full
The lagoons of the Lençóis Maranhenses fill up turquoise-blue from May to September, after the rains — the magic window for the classic walk, at its peak in July and August. From June to August the village is at its liveliest and the wind favours kitesurfing. Outside that window Atins is still beautiful: beach, river and the Rancho’s coconut grove all year round — only the lagoons run low, and the village grows even quieter. Whatever the month, message us on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you the best time for what you want to see.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to Rancho do Buna in Atins?
Fly to São Luís (SLZ), continue by transfer or coach to Barreirinhas (about 4 hours), then take a boat along the Rio Preguiças (1h30) or a 4x4 along the beach. We’ll guide you through each leg and point you to trusted partners over WhatsApp.
When is the best time to visit the Lençóis Maranhenses?
From May to September the lagoons are full and turquoise — the best time for the classic walk. Outside that window the village is still lovely, with beach, river and the Rancho’s coconut grove.
Is the Rancho on the beach?
No — Rancho do Buna sits in the village of Atins, inside a coconut grove by the Rio Preguiças, a few minutes’ walk from the beach. Village calm, with the beach right there.
How much does it cost to stay?
Rates vary a lot by season and room type. Send us your dates and number of guests on WhatsApp and we’ll send a quote right away — booking direct with us gets you the best rate, guaranteed.
Do I need much luggage or special clothing?
Pack light: beachwear, sunscreen, water-friendly shoes and something for the evening wind. The 4x4 and boat have luggage limits, so a backpack beats a large suitcase.
How many days are worth spending in Atins?
We recommend 3 to 4 nights. That’s enough to do the classic Lençóis walk at a relaxed pace, see the Mandacaru Lighthouse by boat, enjoy the beach and still have days for the coconut grove and a hammock at the Rancho — without the rush of a day trip.
Can you reach Atins by car?
Not directly — there’s no paved road into the village. The best option is to leave the car in Barreirinhas and do the final leg by boat along the Rio Preguiças or by 4x4 along the beach, depending on the tide. We’ll advise you on where to leave the car and how to carry on.
How does the last stretch to the Rancho work once I reach the port?
Once you reach the port at Atins, the Rancho is just nearby, through the village’s sandy lanes. We’ll explain exactly how to do that last stretch over WhatsApp — just let us know your arrival time.
Can I bring my pet?
Yes, pets are welcome! Several animals already roam the land freely here — peacocks, ducks, donkeys and chickens — so your companion will feel right at home. We just ask that you let us know in advance on WhatsApp, so we can work out the details together.
Do the accommodations have air conditioning or a fan?
It depends on the room. The Chalé Buna, our original wooden chalet, has a fan and wonderful natural ventilation between the coconut grove and the igarapé. The bungalows and the double suite have air conditioning. Just let us know what you prefer and we’ll help you pick the right one.
Is there Wi-Fi at the Rancho?
Yes, we offer free Wi-Fi in the rooms and the common areas — enough to work, take calls and share your holiday photos. As Atins is a remote village, the connection is simple — but it does the job, and it’s still a lovely invitation to slow down.
What’s on offer at breakfast?
Breakfast is included with your stay and served under the thatched roof: seasonal fruit, tapioca, homemade breads and cakes, fresh juices and coffee freshly brewed. Simple, fresh and regional, at the village’s own gentle pace.
Is the Rancho good for families with children?
Yes. There’s a pool for a dip among the coconut palms, the free-roaming animals that delight the little ones, and the Family Bungalow — more spacious, with a double bed and two singles. The village is peaceful and the beach has soft sand — a lovely, safe spot for little ones.
